Rock divas are, first and foremost, female vocalists — unquestionably monumental in range and diversity. Defined as prima donnas and goddesses, the term diva was first applied to opera singers such as Beverly Sills and Dame Joan Sutherland. But as women became more prominent as singers and musicians in all styles of music, the diva label became synonymous with a strong and powerful female elite that emerged.
