Description
2012 release, the second volume of Delta Swamp Rock. This collection continues to journey into the heartland of the American south, exploring the musical links between country, rock and soul music in the 1960s and early 1970s. Deep in the southern towns and cities of America - Muscle Shoals, Nashville, Memphis and Macon - select groups of (largely unknown) session musicians made musical history on an almost daily basis. Southern rock rose up in the 1970s on the huge commercial success of southern-based groups the Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker, Lynyrd Skynyrd and others. Like the twisted roots of rock and roll, southern rock put country, rock and black music into a melting pot to create a unique sound. This gave rise to a new identity for white southern working-class youth.

Much like Volume 1, the headline title of this compilation - Delta Swamp Rock - is slightly misleading and the sub title 'At the Crossroads of Rock, Country and Soul' describes it better. A single disc affair, it's only 13 minutes shorter in playing time than the double disc first volume and the overall quality of the songs here is superior. A delicious melting pot of rock, country and soul (and even a bit of funk), the songs really do deliver. From Area Code 415's storming banjo and harmonica driven 'Ruby' to Earl Scruggs closing 'Lonesome And A Long Way From Home' the sequencing is (almost) perfect. Bobbie Gentry weighs in with a couple of sublime cuts with 'Touch 'Em With Love' (the chorus sounds almost identical to Van Morrison's 'Crazy Love' in places) being the pick. The aforementioned Area Code 415's 'Devil Weed And Me' is a country-psych jam and Tony Joe White brings the funk with 'Who's Making Love'. The guitar on Chet Atkins & Jerry Reed 'Tennessee Stud' is deliriously good and 'Sufficiently Breathless' by Captain Beyond is a cool and breezy number that takes in a fuzzy guitar break. Lynyrd Skynyrd's 'Freebird' seems to have been included for the populist vote and does seem out of step with much of the music here (an edited version featuring the second half of the song would have made the perfect album outro though). With a running time of 76:29 and featuring the standard Soul Jazz Records accompanying booklet (52 pages), this is a fine compilation. 4½ stars and recommended.I bought this because I enjoyed the first volume & I wasn't disappointed, but then I've never been disappointed by anything I've bought on the Soul Jazz label. The track choice is more obscure than the first which I thought was good; I recognised most of the first volume already even if I didn't own it. The sleeve notes are great as is the packaging. The picture on the front may be slightly misleading, it isn't a collection of pre-1950 country-folk which is what the image seems to indicate but that's a pretty tiny gripe. There's a nice diversity of genres from country-soul to southern rock, nothing too Cajun (I would be happy to hear more Cajun stuff but that wouldn't fit this particular collection). Some well known songs from well known artist, but quite a few from artist not so well known. Gives good examples of the southern rock scene.a first rate cd and definitely worth 5 stars. A really god mix of tracks all good with a few gems.as good as the first volume and again comes with an excellent bookletREALACION CALIDAD PRECIO SOBRESALIENTE, NO TE EQUIVOCAS AL COMPARLO. SI TE GUSTA LA MUSICA AMERICANA, PRESENTACION EXCELENTE Y UN BUEN SONIDO
