Professor (Henry Roseland Byrd) Longhair and Clarence Gatemouth Brown recorded together just one time: It was on Rock N Roll Gumbo (1974). And this may not have happened if Gatemouth had not just completed recording Down South In The Bayou Country just weeks earlier in the same Bogalusa, Louisiana recording studio that Rock N Roll Gumbo was to be recorded. Thank god we have them together at least once! This music Gumbo sits very well together. Also with this exceptional duo is The Professor’s personal conga player Uganda Roberts. The reliable Julius Farmer is on bass. Sheeba (edwin Kimbraugh) on drums.I liked the fact on this 1985 re-release producer Philip Rault added sax and trumpet on the song Mardi Gras In New Orleans —very appropriate! And Mardi Grad is then followed by Gatemouth Brown playing violin on Jumbalaya which is a better version of this Cajun tune Gate played (too long) on his The Man album (1993).Professor Longhair’s piano style-quirks-originality shine throughout: Mess Around; and Rum And Coke to name just two. The playful New Orleans (merry melodies? Looney tunes ...?) vibe is soooh entertaining. It’s catchy and fun while never succumbing to a ‘novelty’ type song.Rockin Pneumonia a great tune, also — too bad not longer (a shout out to Billy Vera who did a great redo of rockin pneumonia with ensemble of horns ... no kidding: Billy and the Beaters...!)AnywaysRock N Roll Gumbo starring Professor Longhair on keys a 5 star gem.Solid recording with good liner notes also.
