My title really says it all. The vastly underrated Felicity Lott outdoes vocally in terms of beauty, purity, colors, verbal and musi-cal nuance and clarity all of the recent and earlier competition, from such "greats" as Elisabeth Schumann to Elly Ameling, Renee Fleming, etc. (This regard may or may not explain why my CDs of it wear out so quickly; I am now on my third.) While her recorded work is not sparse, I am at a loss (as a longtime professor, writer, and composer), at a professional loss, to explain to myself her re-corded absence in the most demanding repertoire (the song cycles and Mahler, Debussy, and new music). More, please!
